Ranil remains UNP leader

The UNP Working Committee which met yesterday re-appointed Ranil Wickremesinghe as the party Leader. It was also decided to formulate the party constitution to devolve more powers among the Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya and the Working Committee which were earlier entirely vested with Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.

According to party sources this Working Committee meeting was considered the longest meeting held during the UNP’s history. The meeting which commenced at 3.00 pm yesterday went on until 9.30 pm. A decision has also been reached to create a new Senior Deputy Leader post of the UNP.

The names of former Minister S.B.Dissanayake and UNP MP Sajith Premasada have been proposed to this new post. Meanwhile, the Working Committee has also approved a proposal made by MP Palitha Range Bandara to cancel the earlier decision taken to create a Senior Leader post.
