Computer Society conducts workshop in Buttala

The Computer Society of Sri Lanka (CSSL) conducted a one day workshop
at the Yudaganawa Vidyalaya, Buttala recently.
This was the first workshop conducted by the CSSL as part of its
project to create awareness in ICT for rural areas for 2009.
Yudaganawa is a remote village in the Moneragala District with very
less facilities in access to ICT.
The workshop was conducted for students and teachers of Grade 9 to 11
Classes of Yudaganawa Vidyalaya together with some students of
Unaavatuna Vidyalaya.
The workshop attended by more than 175 students was well received by
both the teachers and the students.
The topics discussed were basic understanding of the computer and
benefits of Internet and Email, current trends in ICT and eSriLanka
initiative and its benefits to rural masses.
Typesetting and DTP courses
The Sri Lanka Institute of Printing under the Mass Media and
Information Ministry will commence the certificate course in Computer
Typesetting and Desk Top Publishing by end March 2009.
The institute has already started issuing application forms. The
selection of students will be done through an interview.
This five month course will provide the knowledge in computer
typesetting and essentials computer knowledge, applications, operating
systems and basic graphic designing. It is focused on employees in the
print and graphics industry.

Lions Club of Moratuwa/Ratmalana organized the quiz program “Sri
Lankan Masterminds” for the 15th consecutive year, with the sponsorship
of DFCC Vardhana Bank.
The program was held yesterday at Hotel Ceylon Intercontinental. The
captivated audience were from corporate sector, financial institutions
and schools. Entrance fee for schools Rs. 6,000 per team and others Rs.
6,500 per team.
The objectives of this project is to bring together the best “think
tanks” in the country to one platform and give them the opportunity to
be the best.
Derana TV and TNL Radio were the electronic media partners to this
event.

The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators, UK, held
its 2009 Convocation at the Trans Asia Hotel last month where 27
graduates, 16 associates and four fellows were awarded their Degree
Certificates by Chief Guest, CEO of ICSA, UK, Roger Dickinson in the
presence of President of the ICSA Sri Lanka Prof. M.T.A. Furkhan.

Noor Fasath Ariffeen of 202/41, Mohideen Masjid Rd, Maradana, Colombo
10 has been appointed Grama Niladhari. He is a Life Member of the Sri
Lanka United Malay Organisation (SLUMO) and Principal of Ahadhiyya
School of Sri Lanka Islamic Center, Colombo 10.
He is also the Chairman of The Brother Organisation and Vice
President of Janasa (All Island).
Ariffeen is a past pupil of Asoka Maha Vidyalaya also an All Island
Justice of Peace.
