Rubella vaccination inquiry:
Action against errant officials

The Health Ministry said yesterday the full report into
investigations into the Rubella vaccination which caused serious
complications among students in Matara leading to the death of one will
be presented to Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva today.

Ministry officials said stern action will be taken against those
responsible for this based on the report. The Epidemiology Department
and the Public Health Department of the Health Ministry have conducted
two separate investigations into this vaccination which is to expire in
November this year.
Instruments used for the vaccination have also been thoroughly
checked to ascertain whether they were approved.
World Health Organization (WHO) vaccination experts were expected to
arrive here yesterday.
Ministry sources said the WHO experts comprising Dr. Suchard Geheart
of France and Dr. Madhav of India will conduct a complete investigation
into the standard of the vaccine administered to 400,000 Sri Lankans a
year.
According to Ministry sources, this type of cases may occur once in
400,000 cases and the vaccination program temporarily suspended by the
Government can be resumed if recommended by the WHO experts.
Public Health Services Deputy Director Dr. Palitha Mahipala who
probed this matter, was to handover the interim report to the Health
Ministry Secretary yesterday evening.
