Family members participate at Police Hero’s Day

For the first time of the history of the Police Department, the
“Police Hero’s Day” was commemorated at the Police Field Force
Headquarters on Saturday morning with the participation of family
members of the fallen heroes under a new concept initiated by Inspector
General of Police Jayantha Wickremaratna.

The Police Hero’s Day ceremony commenced with the hoisting of the
Police Flag at half mast by the IGP who placed a wreath at the memorial.
Close family members of the fallen heroes’ placed wreaths followed by
Senior DIGs Mahinda Balasuriya, Nimal Mediwaka, N. K. Ilangakoon,
Keerthi Gajanayake, Upali Gunasekera, Siriwardena and DIGs Sisira Mendis,
Chandra Wickremaratne, H.M.D. Herath and Gamini de Silva.
An ‘Oil Lamp’ was presented to family members of the fallen heroes by
the IGP with a hand book containing all the names of the fallen heroes
as a recognition of their gallantry.
IGP Wickremaratne assured family members of the fallen heroes that
the Police Department will look after their welfare and would not desert
them. He appealed to them to bring any personnel matters to his notice.
The Fallen Hero’s Day was celebrated at all 411 police stations in
the country with the participation of families. The total number of
police personnel who sacrificed their lives whilst on duty has been
recorded at 3,076, including 16 police women.
The IGP and several senior police officers and members of the fallen
heroes participated at a religious ceremony at the Gangaramaya Temple,
Colombo.
