Cop aiding ganga smugglers nabbed

A police constable who aided a man to smuggle six kilos of ganja from Kataragama to Kandy was arrested at Peradeniya yesterday when they were transporting ganja in a box under the seat of a private bus plying from Kataragama to Kandy.

Central Anti Vice Squad officers nabbed the two along with the stock of ganja valued at Rs.500,000. The Constable attached to Dematagoda Police had aided the smuggler to avoid police checkpoints on the way to Kandy and he had taken Rs.10,000 from the smuggler, Central Anti Vice Squad OIC Inspector Jayasiri Amarasinghe said.

Investigations have revealed the smuggler is the husband of the pregnant woman who was arrested with ganja in Kandy recently. He had taken the illegal drugs to find the money required to release his wife and mother-in-law who are in the police custody.
