Eliyakanda Hill Climb a great success
Bernard PERERA
The Eliya- kanda Hill Climb 2009 sponsored by Nations Trust which
came to an on Sunday successfully saw many experienced drivers and
riders come as victors in many events.
Firstly it was the drivers who made good use of the 800 meter circuit to their liking doing their runs very efficiently
to thrill the crowd that flocked to see this interesting event run
annually organized by the Southern Motor Sports Club. In the Super Cars
event Dinesh Deheragoda who entered his Mitsubishi Evolution X for the
first time for the Hill Climb proved that he is a driver of the Elite
class.
Rohan Fonseka who reached the podium to receive the second
runner up award driving his Jeep to clock 49.92 secs. |
He had tough opposition coming from young Pasindu Pieris in addition
to the experienced drivers Aravinda Premadasa and Shantha Suraweera.
In Both runs Deheragoda was in front doing the best time which also
gave him all the coveted trophies on offer on this day.
Dhammika Pieris who has been a top driver on racing tracks in
Katukurunda and Pannala too performed well on this to reach the podium
on three occasion with one victory and two placings.
The other drivers to perform well on this day were Dinesh Jayawardene,
Prasanna de Alwis, Dinesh Senanayake, Maneen Amadoru, K.
Parameshwaran,Chamika Ranatunga, A.D.S. Ajith Keerthi and experienced
Mahen Madugalla driving hi Morris Mini 1050cc.
The only major incident that happened on this day was when young
Missaka Naveen crashed on to a lamp while negotiating one of the
dangerous corners.
The two fastest Driver and the Rider at the Eliyakanda Hill
Climb Dinesh Deheragoda (Cars) and Indika Gurusinghe (Motor
Cycles) with their trophies. |
But the luck was with him and he walked out minus injuries and was
seen in action in other events.
The Jeeps and Trucks event saw only few vehicles competing and a
veteran on this category Lanil Galaboda took major honours pushing
Sanjaya sedara Senarath and Rohan Fonseka in to runners up positions.
On two wheelers it was Indika Gurusinghe who stole the limelight
winning two major events. But few young riders too excelled in different
classes.
Gayan Sandaruwan was the notable absedntee here but the young riders
and the few experienced riders kept the spectstors spell bound with
their dare devil riding skills.
Specially Sasindu Pieris and M.G. Sarath Kumarasinghe as they were at
their best.
Vijitha Perera and Maduranga Caldera are the two riders to excel on
this circuit. Though much was expected from riders of the caliber of
Tuan Ossen and Shafraz Junaid they failed to achieve the results they
were hoping.
The two foreign riders Greg Watson and M. Nizir however made their
way to the podium when they were placed second and third in two
different classes events.
All in all it was a well organized event and the competitors and
spectators enjoyed every bit of action, while the sponsors too had their
expected mileage for their money's worth.
