Massive water supply scheme for Jaffna

The Government will soon implement a massive water supply scheme in
the Jaffna peninsula utilising the water of Iranamadu tank. Drinking
water facilities are expected to provide to the people in the
Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts too after they are resettled in
their original dwellings.
Water Supply Minister Mahinda Amaraweera at a press conference in
Colombo said the National Water Supply and Drainage Board has deployed
adequate water and gully bowsers to the welfare centres in Vavuniya and
Omanthai for civilians fleeing from uncleared areas.
The Minister said the Asian Development Bank has provided Rs. 28, 000
million for the implementation of drinking water supply schemes
islandwide and the people in the Batticaloa district benefited by the –
Unnachiya water supply scheme implemented under the ADB fund.
He said comprehensive water supply projects have already been planned
covering in all districts in the Eastern Province.
The Ministry has also appointed 5 teams to look into problems with
regard to water supply in the Colombo region and consumers can now lodge
their complaints over the NWS&DB hotline - 1939.
