Merkel's Party on course to win state vote

germany: An exit poll indicates that Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives and their allies are set to win a closely watched state election. That would give them a strong start to a national election year.

The ARD television exit poll Sunday gives Merkel's Christian Democratic Union 37.5 percent of the vote in western Hesse state. They should be able to form a center-right coalition with the pro-business Free Democrats, on 16 percent.

The exit poll shows a heavy defeat - just 23.5 percent of the vote - for Germany's main center-left party, the Social Democrats.

Merkel will seek a second term in office in the Sept. 27 national election.
