The pilot project of the Rs. 25 million investment will be launched shortly with the private hospitals in and around Colombo, Director Finlay, Thushara Agus said at a press briefing held in Colombo yesterday. Finlay Rentokil is the only company authorised to handle and dispose clinical waste according to the Central Environmental Authority guidelines. The machine has been already installed at the Vauxhall Street plant and has treated several batches of clinical waste successfully. Agus said that the service is designed to provide a solution to the totality of infectious waste comprising of types A,B and C as identified by the Health Services Advisory Committee in 1999.

Regional Representative Hydroclave Canada Alfred Vanderwal elaborating on the advantages of this project said that no major investments in a waste management plant will be required and the machine does not have to be installed in customers premises, no in house expertise required. The machine is energy efficient and cost saving due to the economics of scale achieved through the volume of business.

Vanderwal said a collection truck will visit relevant institutions to collect waste containers replacing fresh units.

The waste is transported back to the treatment centre at Colombo and will be subjected to sterilisation using the latest Hydroclave technology. The treated end product will be separated according to the type and all recyclable and plastic and metal will be palletised and sent for recycling. The remaining dehydrated pulp will be either given as an energy source to the Holcim kiln or sent to a sanitary landfill he said.
