Transport Ministry to streamline public transport in Kilinochchi

The heroic Armed Forces filled the vacuum of transport service in Kilinochchi on a regular basis in the recent past supplying of essential food items and medicine by air and sea to civilians in Kilinochchi despite the LTTE terrorist activity.

With the jubilant victory of the capturing of Kilinochchi by the Armed Fores, the Transport Ministry is planning to streamline the public transport system for the convenience of commuters in Kilinochchi which was defunct for the last 15 years. Transport Minister Dullas Alahapperuma told the Daily News that his Ministry has a vital role to play in the re-organisation of the transport system in Kilinochchi as no private passenger service functioned over there.

Special buses and trains will soon be added to benefit civilians in Kilinochchi who have been dreaming about the bright future from State transport system.

Once the troops clear the roads in Kilinochchi, the Government will move to improve roads badly damaged as a result of war. Thereafter, more buses will be added to the fleet to bring civilian life to normalcy.

The bus depot and the railway station in Kilinochchi which provided an efficient service to civilians before LTTE terrorism began, will be recommenced. Once the Security Forces confirm that the roads are free from land mines, the roads will be improved with the assistance from the Nation Building Ministry.

The rail track in Kilinochchi will be repaired to benefit the railway commuters while the station will be upgraded.

Passenger transportation is a decentralised subject and an efficient transport system is expected to be in place once the Northern Provincial Council is established in the future.
