Shashikala leads Lanka to victory

Skipper Shashikala Siriwardena with a brilliant knock of 43 helped Sri Lanka level Series with West Indies women after defeating them in the second ODI of the five match series at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium yesterday.

Siriwardena’s included six boundaries which came in 69 deliveries. Sri Lankan women looked much confident on their batting yesterday than in the first game.

West Indies women got off to a good start in yesterday’s gamei Stefanie Taylor and Merissa Aguilera posted a 62 run partnership for the first wicket. The new combination seemed to be working well for the Windies as Deandra Dottin who was not so successful in the first match, was dropped down in the batting line up.

Taylor hit five boundaries before she was out for 33 runs. The Lankan skipper Shashikala Siriwardena caught her at the covers off a delivery from Eshani lokusuriya.

Soon Aguilera departed being lbw for Lokusuriya for 27. After that, no big scores were recorded except for the 30 run knock by Juliana Nero. The wickets fell at regular intervals and Stacy Ann King who top scored in the previous match, was out for eight as wicketkeeper Manodara caught her off the bowling of Sripali Weerakkody.

Windies skipper Nadine George departed for seven as Polgampola caught her off a delivery from Abeywickrama.

Nero was the fifth victim when Manodara took her catch. The wicket belonged to Suwini de Alwis.

The others did not go for good scores and wickets kept on falling and the Windies ended up with 169, a better score than their first match, for nine wickets.

Sripali Weerakkody, Eshani Lokusuriya, Shashikala Siriwardena and Suwini de Alwis bagged two wickets each while Sanduni Abeywickrama hd one wicket under belt.

Lankans lost one of their openers, Chamari Polgampola who was the top scorer for Sri Lanka in the first match, when she departed without scoring bowled by Kirbyina Alexander. After that Hiruka Fernando was out for 13, bowled by Danielle Small.

From there onwards the Lankan batswomen looked stable and was going on well with Dedunu Silva and Sanduni Abeywickrama.

They put on a 25 run partnership before Dedunu got out, caught by Nero and off Alexander. Sanduni Abeywickrama was the fourth to go. She was run out for 18. Eshani Kaushalya departed for 16, bowled by Taylor.

Chandi Wickramasinghe joined the skipper and helped her to swell the total to 144.

She was lbw to Fletcher for 14, Senevirathna joined in but did not last long and was bowled by Fletcher for just one.

Shashikala Siriwardena who top scored in the match with 43lost her wicket to Mohommed when the scoreboar read at 152. De Alwis and Monodara carried on with the good work to win the match with Monodara scoring the winning run with only four deliveries remaining.
