Army Commander Lieutenant
General Sarath Fonseka, flew to Vavuniya yesterday morning
along with several senior officers to have an update of the
security situation in the Wanni war front and review the
progress of the military operations directly conducted under
him. The Army Commander addressed senior Ground Commanders
at the Wanni Security Forces Headquarters auditorium after
taking stock of military operations briefed by Commander
Security Forces Headquarters Wanni Major General Jagath
Jayasuriya. Dispatch of food convoys to uncleared areas
across the Omanthai entry/exit point, providing basic
facilities to Internally Displaced Persons arriving from
uncleared areas and possibilities to arrange schooling
facilities for children of IDPs were also discussed during
the meeting. Lt. Gen. Fonseka gave instructions to implement
when mapping out future contingency plans.
Four held for smuggling goods to Lanka
Four Sri Lankan nationals, including a suspected
LTTE activist, have been arrested when they attempted to smuggle
materials, including tyres and batteries to Sri Lanka.
