Launch of novels
Award winning Sinhala novelist Bhadraji Mahinda Jayatilake’s Dineka
Kusinarave - a novel based on the last days of the Buddha and Gethsemeni
Sandyawa - a novel based on the last days of Jesus Christ will be
launched on today at 3.00 p.m. at the BMICH. The two novels are
published by Sarasavi Publishers Limited. Chief Incumbent, Sri
Wardhanaramaya, Kelaniya will be the special guest.
Jayatilake’s Garden of Love, a collection of English songs will also
be released on the same occasion.
Gift packs for needy
Gift packs will be distributed to 500 needy persons by the Sri Lanka
Malay Association Rupee Fund on September 27 from 3.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.
at Jalan Padang, Kew Road, Colombo 2.
Petroleum and Petroleum Resources Minister A. H. M. Fowzie
participate at 3.30 p.m. to distribute the gift packs.
Indonesian Ambassador and the Malaysian High Commissioner will also
attend.
Bharatha Ridee Gee
Bharatha Ridee Gee which is broadcast every Saturday on Isura FM 93.6
from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. looks back at the Golden days of Indian cinema.
The best of the Hindi cinema will be featured on this one hour
programme compered by Sulakshini Perera and produced by Aruna Pattinige.
Cricket gear for 16 schools
The Nuwara Eliya District Cricket Association has made arrangements
to supply cricket sports equipment to schools in the Nuwara Eliya
district.
Central Province Councillor W.G. Ranasinghe who is also the SLFP
Chief Organiser for Maskeliya has allocated Rs. 160,000 for 16 schools
in Nuwara Eliya district. It is reported that the schools in the Nuwara
Eliya district have not been provided with cricket equipment for several
years.
Mushrif Needs help
Fifteen-year student M. T. M. Mushrif, residing at No. 469/1, Hijra
Mawatha, Thihariya is suffering from a liver with portal hypertension.
Upon diagnosis he has been recommended a surgery by Dr. P. Radhakrishna
of Appolo Hospital, India.
The surgery is estimated to cost Rs. 900,000.
The child’s father says he is unable to foot this cost due to his
family’s financial plight. He requests public help.

Suspect farmer remanded
The suspect of the case of the bus bomb blast on February 02, 2006
named Hemalatha who was in remand prison and produced before the
Magistrate’s Courts, Dambulla.
The Magistrate Nimal Ranaweera ordered the suspect to be further
remanded till October 06.
Appeal for Lak Sathosa in Nuwara Eliya
Nuwara Eliya is one of the main towns in the Nuwara Eliya district
and its population is increasing rapidly.
According to its residents a branch of the Lak Sathosa is a necessity
to act as a check on the high prices of food stuffs.
The public urged Bandula Gunawardhana, Minister of Trade, Marketing
development, Cooperative and consumer services to begin the Lak Sathosa
Branch soon.

Manioc, Kankun, Loora leaf a local rural vegetable which is rich in
iron and vitamins has become a money spinner for rural farmers in Nuwara
Eliya district.
This popular variety of vegetables is available for sale in Nuwara
Eliya district Polas and public markets in almost every part of the
district in the bundle of vegetable sold as Rs. 5 but it now available
at Rs. 15 per bundle retail.
Kasippu deaths rise to seven

Three more people have died after consuming the poisonous moonshine
in Galoluwa, Weliweriya on Wednesday bringing the death toll to seven.
The number fallen ill has risen to 52, police said.
A woman who is the wife of the kasippu brewer was arrested.
Non-stop talk to raise funds for kidney patient

Sivasiri Alagu Jegatheeswara Thesigar attached to J/Valvetty Hindu
Mixed School is making arrangements to give a speech for nine and a half
hours continuously to raise funds to a person who needs a kidney
operation.
The event will be held tomorrow from 7.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. at J/Kamparmalai
Vidyalaya, Kommantharai, Valvettiturai.
Thesigar is a Bachelor Business Administration from the Jaffna
University and a past student of Point Pedro Heartly College.
Gateway to success
Gateway to Success- a Career Fair and Exhibition will be held today
at the University of Peradeniya.
The event is organised jointly by the Alumni Association of the
University of Peradeniya (AAUP). AAUP Colombo Chapter and the Career
Guidance Unit of the University. Commercial Banks private companies and
educational institutes will participate.
Vidyodaya Friends Get-together
A get-together of alumni of the Vidyodaya University working in Sri
Lanka and abroad organised by Vidudaya Mithuro will be held on October 4
at 10 a.m. at Lanka Siri, 9, Melder Place, Nugegoda.
Several items including sports, dancing and singing are on the

New Bishop to be felicitated
The Colombo Branch of St. Michael's College (Batticaloa) Alumni
Association will felicitate the new Auxiliary Bishop of
Batticaloa-Trincomalee Most Rev. Dr. Ponniah Joseph at their 63rd Annual
General Meeting on October 13 at Hotel Sapphire, Colombo 6.
The Bishop will concelebrate Holy Mass along with old boy priests of
the College at 6 p.m. on the same day at the Jesuit Chapel, Clifford
Place, Colombo 4.
Thai Society AGM
The 11th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka-Thailand Society
will be held on October 10 at 5.30 p.m. at the Eighty Club of Colombo,
Independence Square, Colombo 7 under the patronage of the Ambassador of
Thailand Thinakorn Kanasuta.
Lecture series
The monthly lecture of the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka will be
held on September 29 at 5.00 p.m. at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium
of the Mahaweli Center, 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.
The lecture "Dandris de Silva Gunaratna: Recalling his Times and Some
Landmarks in his Career" will be presented by Dr. K. Locana Gunaratna.
The lecture is open to the public.
Health camp
A health camp for plantation workers in the Maskeliya/Upcot Region
organised by the Planters Club of Maskeliya in collaboration with the
Lions Club of Homagama, District 306 C2 will be held on September 28
from 8.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. at Gouraville Tamil Vidyalaya Upcot.
The Health Camp will focus on screening patients for cancer/oral
cancer eye and dental problems, diabetes, high blood pressure
(Hypertension) and paediatrics etc.

Horse Race in Nuwara Eliya
A Horse Race meet organised by the Sri Lanka Turf Club will be held
on October 3 from 10.00 a.m. at the Nuwara Eliya Race Course. There will
be six races.
Sports and Public Recreation Minister Gamini Lokuge will be the chief
guest. He will also lay the foundation stone to develop the race course
on the same day.
Seminar for youth
B. K. Sathesh, a renowned spiritual teacher in Malaysia and Singapore
will conduct a youth forum on "Inner experience and expression" at Raja
Yoga Centre, 74, Davidson Road, Bambalapitiya on September 29 at 5.30
p.m.
The lecturer who has conducted a series of youth seminars in Sydney,
New York and the Global Retreat Centre at Oxford is visiting Colombo en
route to U.K.
