Two new records in boys discus throw event

All Island School Games:

Two new records were established in the Discus Throw event in the under 19 and 15 age group categories for boys on the first day of the All Island School Games which began at the Sugathadasa Outdoor Stadium last morning.

In the Discus event for the under-19 age group for Boys D. Sanjuna Sumanaweera of Royal International School Colombo with a distance of 49.57 metres eclipsed a 14-year record in the same event which stood to the credit of W. S. Udana Livera of Pothuwilluwa MV, Palaviya, of the North Western Province with a distance of 49.42.

In the only other new record created for the day in the under 15 age category for Boys, W. H. M. C. Kapukotuwa of Royal College, Colombo lowered the previous best which was recorded by K. P. Amila Perera of St. Joseph’s College Colombo with a distance of 49.93 metres in 2003. Kapukotuwa’s distance yesterday was 55.23 metres.

Over 5,000 athletes from 1,004 schools from countrywide began the All Island School Games, at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday. 473 athletes from the Northern Province and 548 athletes from the Eastern Province are also competing in this event which is to continue till September 30.

The closing ceremony will be held on Tuesday at 1.30 pm under the patronage of Minister of Education Services Nirmala Kothalawela.

The results:

Discus (under-19) boys: D. Sanjuna Sumanaweera (Royal International School, Colombo) 49.57. P. Sampath de Silva (Royal College Colombo) 41.99.

Discus (under-15) boys: K. W. H. M. C. Kapukotuwa (Royal, Colombo) 55.23.

Long jump (under-19) boys: L. P. Sudeera Thilanga (Dharmaloka, Kelaniya) 7.19 m.

3,000 m (under-19) girls: M. K. Shilantha (Wallala A. Ratnayake MV, Menikhinna) 10.39.

High jump (under-19) girls: C. J. W. Jayasuriya (Sri Dharmaloka, Kelaniya) 1.63 m.

5,000 m (under-19) boys: W. M. J. P. Weerasinghe (Wallala Ratnayake MV, Menikhinna) 16.12.63 m.

Long jump (under-21) girls: J. M. Ishara Udayangi (Yasodara Balika, Colombo) 4.93 m.

Javelin throw (under-21) girls: H. A. M. S. Anuruddhika (D. S. Senanayake MV, Ampara) 35.64 m.

High jump (under-21) boys: W. P. A. Kasun Pathirana (Rajangana MV, Rajangana) 1.95 m.

Shot putt (under-17) boys: Shamila Jayakody (Thakshila MV, Horana) 14.19 m.

Long jump (under-15) girls: P. A. Sarindi Karunaratne (Vishaka, Colombo) 5.12 m.

Shot putt (under-17) girls: Chayanika Perera (St. Bridget’s Convent, Colombo) 10.30 m.
