Cyclonic conditions in Oct-Nov

COLOMBO: The Meteorology Department yesterday warned of more cyclonic effects with the beginning of inter-monsoon weather and cyclone season from October to November. It would probably extend to the first half of December.

According to the World Meteorology standards more than ten per cent of life and property damage could be avoided if necessary changes are effected heeding weather forecasting warnings, said Senior Director of the Meteorology Department G.B. Samarasinghe.

Cyclones are expected in the lower zone of the cumulonimbus clouds of the atmosphere due to air depression and movements, Director Samarasinghe added.

Samarasinghe said weather forecasting would not be based on shelf-life style information. Several model studies have to be carried out on atmospheric patterns. State of art technology is being applied on meteorological studies in advanced countries. "Our officials are trying their best to forecast weather more accurately."
