Tissanayagam indicted

The Attorney General informed the Supreme Court when the rights
application of Sunday Times columnist J.S. Tissanayagam was taken up
before the court on Thursday that he (Tissanayagam) had been indicted
before the High Court.
Senior State Counsel Parinda Ranasinghe submitted that Tissanayagam
had been indicted in connection with his alleged involvement with the
LTTE. He also submitted that the High Court had ordered to remand the
petitioner.
President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva for the petitioner’s submitted
that he would not pursue the interim relief i.e. to release the
petitioner on bail in view of his indictment.
J.S. Tissanayagam complained to Court that he had been arrested and
detained by the TID in violation of his fundamental rights. He stated
that he had no involvement with the LTTE.
The petitioner cited OIC TID, Prasanna de Alwis, the IGP and the
Attorney General.
Romesh de Silva PC with J.C. Weliamuna and M.A. Sumanthiram appeared
for the petitioner. SSC Parinda Ranasinghe appeared for the respondents.
The case was put off for September 10. |
