The charismatic Mahinda Rajapaksa is an astute
politician who could market any product to the people in a
convincing manner. The presence of President Rajapaksa convinced the
people on the true side of the ongoing effort to crush terrorism.
With malice towards none, truly it was a personal victory for the
President, a veteran political campaigner.

Green and Red: The dilemmas of defeat
The statement that there was no need for a
general election at this stage, in response to the UNP’s defeatist
bray after yet another defeat, came after the people had on more
than one occasion, shown that despite economic difficulties they
were still with the Government in its policies of people-oriented
development with emphasis on the rural sector, and commitment to the
eradication of terrorism.
