SC decides to inquire FR Application

The Supreme Court yesterday decided to inquire into the Fundamental Rights application seeking the Eastern Provincial Council election be declared as unfair and tainted with violence.

Petitioners, two unsuccessful UNP candidates Arumugan Jegan of Pothuvil and Maharasa Jesuthasan of Kali Kovil complained that their rights had been violated by the inaction of the Police. They stated that they have secured 65,027 and 23,048 votes respectively. They argued that they could have secured more votes had the election been free and fair.

The petitioners stated that the election was marred with violence, widespread intimidation and malpractice. Although the petitioners had complained to the Police about these incidents, the Police had failed to take any action.

J.C. Weliamuna appeared for the petitioners.

The hearing was fixed for November 11.
