Ceylon Glass Company revived
The Ceylon Glass Company has been revived and re-established in the
Horana Export Promotion Zone in terms of a new investment agreement
signed with the BOI recently.
Under the terms of this agreement the BOI will provide a range of
facilities for this project established under the BOI ‘Products Sri
Lanka 300 enterprises’ programme.
Accordingly the Ceylon Glass Company factory which operated in
Ratmalana has been shifted to a new 26 acre location in the Horana
Export Promotion Zone with the company investing US $ 20 million under
the programme’s first stage, the Government Information Department said
in a press release yesterday.
The company’s previous factory premises at Ratmalana will be
exclusively used for office and storage facilities.
The new technological assistance provided would enable the company to
increase its daily production capacity to 250 tons and launch three
modern bottle shapes of various colours.
Ceylon Glass Company CEO Sanjaya Hiwara said the new factory at
Horana had four production lines at present with a daily capacity of 200
tons. Another production line would be added soon to enable it achieve a
daily capacity of 250 tons.
The local demand for its products had shown an increase of 8 to 10
per cent while export orders were also on the increase. The company has
successfully entered the UK market as well and exported coloured bottles
for distilleries producing high quality liquor products.
In addition to the bottle factory, the company maintained a sand
processing factory at Nattandiya which recycled glass in an environment
friendly manner by collecting glass pieces at grass roots level on a
countrywide basis. |
