A first in Sri Lanka:

One number for Mobitel Pre Paid Post Paid

Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, the National Mobile Services Provider gives the freedom to their customers to move from Pre Paid to Post Paid connection or Post Paid to Pre Paid connection while keeping the same Mobitel number.

This introduction to the market will provide great convenience to the customers and is another customer centric initiative by Mobitel, the caring Mobile network which is accommodated to fulfill a need gap that existed in the society. There would be no feature activation fee charged and will have simple migration procedures.

Speaking on this revolutionary feature, CEO of Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, Suren J. Amarasekera said, "We take great pride in being the first and only company to introduce this feature in the country. We believe in providing caring mobile solutions and greater flexibility to our customers, and the introduction of this feature is a reflection of that."

This feature is advantageous to both Post Paid and SMART Pre Paid customers of Mobitel who seek a difference in the system as well as different method of payment for their communication needs. This in addition to those who don't want to lose the number they currently use as it has created a sense of identification and personalization.

Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, the National Mobile Services Provider, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sri Lanka Telecom. In January 2004, the company launched its full-fledged 2.5G GSM network that is EDGE/GPRS enabled and in December 2007 Mobitel launched South Asia's first and only network with super 3.5G HSPA technology.

Investments committed to-date in its 3.5G/2.5G networks and service offering totals over US$200 mn and is set to increase its present 1000+ base stations to 1500 base stations by the end of the year.
