Ampara public market to be developed

The Ampara Public Market is to be developed at a cost of Rs. 20 million by the Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Ministry as part of the Negenahira Navodaya project.

Minister Dinesh Gunawardena initiated the programme by laying the foundation stone for the extension work.

Southern Provincial Council Minister U.G.D. Ariyatillaka, Ampara Urban Council Chairman Sarath Deshapriya and Urban Development Ministry and NHDA district officials were present.

An Urban Development Ministry release said this is part of the Ministry programme to develop the historic Ampara city which lacked behind development earlier due to the conflict and the tsunami.

The Development plan for Ampara town included the renovation of its road network and building of a new Courts Complex and an urban housing complex.

The work would be handled by the NHDA Ampara sub office.
