5 EP local bodies to be upgraded

Five Local bodies in the Eastern Province have been selected to implement the reforms programme recommended by the Presidential Investigation Commission for the Local Government and Provincial Councils Ministry, sources said.

Accordingly the Batticaloa Municipality, Kinniya Urban Council, Trincomalee Municipality, Eravur Pradeshiya Sabha and Uyana Pradeshiya Sabha will be developed as Model Local bodies under the programme.

The Canada-Sri Lanka Municipal Cooperation project will provide funds for the projects.

"The programme's main task is transforming the selected local bodies from a backward state to a progressive and dynamic state through modernising local bodies to face socio-economic changes," Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon said.

The coordinating offices between the Local Bodies and the related Assistant Commissioner's offices of the Eastern Province have already been established, the Minister added.

A number of training programmes were held for the recruited resource personnel and handbooks were also distributed among all Local Bodies in the Eastern Province.
