Peradeniya University re-opens on Monday

KANDY: Except the Science and the Engineering faculties all other
faculties of the Peradeniya University will reopen on March 3 after it
was closed on Monday following a clash between two student groups
belonging to the Science and Engineering Faculties.
The Science and the Engineering Faculties are scheduled to re-open on
March 10, Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Anura Wickramasinghe told the
Daily News.
The decision was taken at a meeting yesterday chaired by the Vice
Chancellor. A verbal argument among two groups of students in the
Science and Engineering Faculties developed into a clash during a social
event on Friday.
However the dispute was settled by the academic staff and students
leaders.
It was reported that a student of the Science Faculty had assaulted
two students of the Engineering Faculty after consuming liquor. The
University premises was declared out of bounds for students of every
faculty by the university administration to prevent a recurrence of
violence.
As a result of the clash, three students were admitted to the
Peradeniya Teaching Hospital while 10 other students also sustained
injuries.
The University administration will carry out an inquiry into the
incident and stern disciplinary action taken against students
responsible for the incidents, sources said.
