Achini outplays Thilini at the trials

Achini Ratnasiri, the 13 year old shuttler from Lindsay BMV created a major upset yesterday when she beat Sri Lanka's No.1 women's shuttler Thilini Jayasinghe at the trials to pick the team for the Thomas and Uber Cup Badminton championships which scheduled to be held from February 18 to 24 in Vietnam.

Young Achini's performances proves that the talents of upcoming players which is a good sign for the future.

Thilini who is ranked 115 in the world, suffered this shock defeat in a three setter, and later she also went down to another national player Nadeesha Gayanthi. With these two losses Thilini's chances of being selected for the singles event are in doubt.

However Thilini still has a chance to enter the doubles event if she comes out with a better performance.

Sri Lanka is expected to send an eight-member team for the Thomas and Uber Cup Championships.

The final trials will be held this evening at the SLBA courts.

Meanwhile Chandrika de Silva won all her singles matches to earn her place in the tour party. Sri Lanka's No.1 Niluka Karunaratne displayed his best at the trials.
