Modern sports complex for Nuwara Eliya

The Nuwara Eliya Race Course and the adjoining Municipal Sports
Complex was taken over by the Sports and Public Recreation Ministry
recently. This was done with the intention of developing the complex
with modern equipment to and also to have a training centre for all
sportsmen and women of the area. The vested area consist of 88 acres.
The Ministry hopes to construct 400m track, an indoor stadium, a
dormitory to house 100 persons, a swimming pool, tennis court,
volleyball court and the horse race track. The amount expected to cost
for the project is 200m.
The Minister Gamini Lokuge made an inspection tour of the Nuwara
Eliya Sports Complex with his officials recently and also held
discussions with Mayor Chandanalal Karunaratne regarding the development
projects.
The Minister also decided to hold the upcoming holiday season in
association with the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council. It was agreed to
set off 30 per cent of the income from this season for the Development
Projects Fund.
The Minister was accompanied by Secretary to the Ministry S.
Liyanagama, Deputy Director Sports Development K.S. Peiris and Media Co-ordinator
to the Ministry Kapila Bamunuarachchi. |
