Indian Court denies permission for pro-LTTE rally
The Madras High Court has dismissed a writ petition by pro-LTTE
People’s Rights Federation seeking permission to hold a conference at
Tirunelveli today.
Justice K Mohanram, dismissing petition filed by the convenor of the
federation P Nedumaran, said it was not possible to entertain the
petition as the Tirunelveli Police Commissioner was yet to dispose of an
application made by the petitioner, seeking permission to hold “Tamizhar
Urimai Manadu’(Tamils’ Rights Conference).
The petitioner was however, at liberty to approach the court if the
permission was denied, the judge said.
The federation had decided to convene two conferences, one at
Cuddalore on Feb 2 and another at Tirunelveli. The permission for
Cuddalore conference was rejected by the Deputy Superintendent of Police
on the ground that the platform could be used to support the banned
outfit.
The objective of the conference was to urge the Tamil Nadu government
to fulfil its promise of supplying food and medicines to Sri Lankan
Tamils and to prevail upon the Centre not to provide arms and ammunition
to the Sri Lankan army. Chennai Online |
