Batticaloa Local Govt elections:
Tamils, Muslims to campaign together
BATTICALOA: The Local Government election campaign has been
strengthened with the Tamil and Muslim communities uniting in Batticaloa.
The Chief of the Muslim Clergy Moulavi Mubarak has lauded the
decision taken recently, for the Tamil and Muslim communities to
campaign together at the forthcoming elections in Battcaloa.
This measure would certainly pave the way for amity and solidarity
among the two communities, Moulavi Mubarak said when he addressed a
gathering of the clergy at their party headquarters recently.
The Moulavi had pointed out that due to certain untoward incidents
that had occurred in the past, such a consensus between the two
communities who spoke Tamil in the area, was thought to be almost
impossible.
However, due to the commendable efforts of Minister Amir Ali and UPFA
General Secretary and Minister Susil Premajayantha, it has turned out to
be a reality.
“This is the first time ever in 25 years that the Tamil and Muslim
communities had aligned themselves with the Government in a Local
Government election”, he further said.
The Moulavi urged the two communities to further consolidate this
unity in the future, within the tenure of President Mahinda Rajapaksa
who immensely respects the rights of all communities in the country. |
