Friend and Guide Scheme launch

The Colombo University Alumni Association will launch a Friend and Guide Scheme for Colombo University undergraduates at 5 p.m. on February 12.

Alumni of the Colombo University interested in participating are requested to write to [email protected] or telephone Ramanee Amarasuriya, President, Alumni Association on 2585616.

There are several university students in need of support. The Alumni Association feels that the time is opportune to put a Friend and Guide Scheme in place.

The scheme envisages appointing a friend and guide to the chosen student, where the student can benefit from the guidance, experience, wisdom and advice of a ‘Friend and Guide.’

As a start, the Alumni Association will launch the scheme with 26 blind undergraduates.


Academic sessions

The 21st annual academic sessions of the College of General Dental Practitioners of Sri Lanka will be held on February 17 at the Hotel Galadari, Colombo.

The President of the College, Dr. K.D.D. Saparamadu will deliver the welcome address and Dr. Philip Newsome, Associate Professor, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Hong Kong will deliver the keynote address at the sessions on the theme “Ceramic Veneers - the practical guide for the dental practitioner.” The first session of the programme, will be chaired by Dr. Hilary Cooray and Major General Dr. Thilak Jayaweera, will explain on “The improvement of one’s Dental Practice through six sigma,” while “Full mouth reconstruction” will be dealt by Dr. Asoka Ratnayake.

The second session, will be chaired by Dr. Sunil Guneratne and at this session Dr. K.M. Wijeratne will discuss the “Challenges in Endodontics” while Dr. Suresh Shanmuganathan will explain the “Surgical management of the third mandibular molar.”

These sessions will be preceded by the delivery of the Brito Muthunayagam Oration by Dr. Philip Newsome.

Professor N.A. De S. Ameratunga of the University of Peradeniya will be the Chief Guest.


Almsgiving to mark centenary

The Ananda College Old Boys’ Association will mark the centenary year of the Association with an almsgiving to 100 Bhikkus today with the presence of former principles and students of other schools. The event is sponsored by Old Anandian Tilak Karunaratne.


Peace camp

A one day peace camp organised by the Constitutional Affairs and National Integration Ministry Peace Building Unit will be held in Tamil at the Dehiowita Ford Estate Community Centre on February 14.

A batch of 100 Tamil youth of both sexes will attend this camp at which S. Vijaya Santhiran of the Peradeniya University and Attorney M. Jagath Liyanarachchi will deliver special lectures.
