LTTE area leader killed

Chengan, identified as an LTTE leader for Thenmarachchi, was killed in a clash with the Security Forces yesterday.

Troops cordoned the area north of Kaithady and conducted a search yesterday around 4.30 p.m. to net a group of Tiger terrorists.

During the operation, terrorists fired at the troops and attempted to flee the area. However, counter fire by the troops killed two terrorists including Chengan.

A subsequent search recovered one T-56 weapon, one micro pistol, one suicide jacket, one GPS (Global Positioning System), a stock of T-56 and pistol ammunition, one mobile phone and one FM radio from the location.

Heavy clashes have erupted between army and LTTE on the Mannar, Vavuniya and Welioya battlefront yesterday.

On the Mannar front, troops advanced further into the Pallikuli area in Adampan and dislodged terrorists’ fortified positions. According to the sources, army infantrymen after a heavy battle captured the trench defence manned by the LTTE terrorists around 8 in the morning.
