SLAA finalises its athletic calendar for 2008

The Athletic Association’s Ex-Co, which met recently, have finalized
the following Athletic calendar for the 2008. The first event for the
season will be the selection trials fixed for February 25and 26 at the
Sugathadasa stadium. This trial will be considered to select athletes
for the forthcoming SAF Games to be held in India.
The Association also has decided to field a team for the Asian
Marathon to be conducted in Hong Kong on February 17.
The local athletic championships that are scheduled to be conducted
during the calendar year are Junior National Championship from May 2-4,
Relay Carnival also in the same month 10-12,and the final event for the
Month of may will be the Lanka Lions Athletic Championships, all these
three events are to be held at the Sugaqthadasa stadium.
The other events, which are to follow next month, are Women’s
Championships at Sugathadasa stadium and the Sri Lanka Schools Athletics
Championships for the John Tarbet Trophy both in Colombo, while the
Kurunegala District Athletic Meet will be conducted at the Maligapitiya
ground on June 24-26.
The 86yh National Athletic Championship for the year 2008 has been
fixed for July 4-6 which h is also the biggest event of the Athletic
calendar, the Sri Lanka Air Force will conduct their annual Race Walk
during this month in Katunayake.
The month of August will see only two events the Sports Festival and
the Sri Lanka Schools Senior Athletics Championships for the John Tarbet
trophy. The Association also has eyes focused on the Olympics during
this month as Sri Lanka is billed to send its participants for the same.
September will see only one local meet when they hold the Inter
District Meet in Colombo. The Athletic scene comes to an end with Sri
Lanka Air Force organized 45th Inter Unit Athletic Championships which
too will be conducted at the Suhathadasa stadium.
Meanwhile the Association has decided to pick athletes to compete in
eleven international meets inclusive of Olympic Games, SAF Games, 3rd
Commonwealth Youth Games, Asian Grand Prix, South Asian Athletic
Championships and the 2nd South Asian All-Stars Competitors Meet.
In addition there will be few other international meets where
competitors take part depending on invitations and their performances. |
