Pakistan's election tribunal rejects appeals against Bhutto's
candidature
PAKISTAN, The election tribunal of Pakistan on Monday rejected two
identical appeals against the acceptance of nomination papers of
Pakistan People's Party (PPP) chairperson Benazir Bhutto, the Associated
Press of Pakistan reported.
Two candidates for the upcoming general elections from Pakistan
Muslim League-Q said that Benazir and her husband were wanted in some
cases and they had been convicted. They said that the nomination papers
of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his brother were rejected on
the similar grounds and the nomination papers of Benazir should not be
accepted either.
Benazir filed nomination papers on two National Assembly seats in her
home district of Larkana, in the southern Sindh province.
Sharif's nomination papers were rejected by the election officials
last week on the grounds that Sharif was convicted for life jail term on
the charges of plane hijacking and corruption.
The Election Commission will issue a final list of candidates on Dec.
16. The polls of the general elections will be held on Jan. 8 next year.
