Thanksgiving Mass to celebrate Archbishop's birthday
The Colombo Archbishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis celebrates his 75th
birthday today with a Thanksgiving Mass at the Chapel of the Archbishop
Palace attended by priests, friends and well-wishes.
Archbishop Gomis is the Chancellor of the Colombo University and Head
of the Aquinas College of Higher Studies. He is the third Sinhala
Archbishop of Colombo Diocese. He became a Bishop at the age of 35 along
with Very Rev. Fr. Edmund J. Fernando OMI, consecrating both on July 17,
1968.
Bishop Gomis was the Editor of the Gnanartha Pradeepaya, when the
Church announced his name as a new Auxiliary Bishop to the late, His
Eminence Thomas Cardinal Cooray OMI.
With the demise of the pioneer Bishop of Anuradhapura, Auxiliary
Bishop Gomis was sent to succeed him in 1996 and served there until he
succeeded Archbishop Nicholas Marcus Fernando who served the diocese for
25 years.
We wish him ad Multos Annos and the Blessings of the Almighty to
continue his service to the Church.
