Female Local Govt. officer assaulted by Trinco mayor and gang

A female officer attached to Trincomalee Local Government office was injured when a group led by Trincomalee Municipal Council chairman and his Deputy assaulted her, Assistant Commissioner of Trincomalee Local Government Department Kumarasingham Gunanathan told the Daily News. The Trincomalee MC is controlled by the TNA.

Gunanathan said the incident took place around 1.30 pm on Monday. The Trincomalee Municipal Council Chairman, Deputy Chairman and two security officers of the Chairman entered his office and abused him in foul language.

He said he suspected the assault was the result of a public complaint made against the Municipal council that the funds of the council were being misappropriated with documents too surfacing pertaining to corrupt acts at the MC.

He said Trincomalee Local Government office asked the Municipal Council Mayor and the Deputy Mayor to submit all relevant documents of fund collections carried out by the MC. But without submitting documents they demanded the petition made by the public be returned to them. As they refused to give the petition the gang led by Chairman and his deputy attempted to forcibly grab the petition from him.

At the time only his assistant was on duty. The gang had tried to assault his assistant. At this instance the female officer had tried to stop them from assaulting his assistant . However the female officer was set upon and severely assault by the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and the gang.

He said when other officers who were on duty rushed to intervene too were abused in filth.

He said when his driver and another Technical Officer arrived on the spot, the gang left the scene in their vehicles.
