Sri Lanka is to take part in the Asian Junior Under 16 Tennis Mixed
Championships which will be worked off in Bangkok, Thailand for the
first time from November 29 to December 3.
Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Uzbekistan and Mongolia are the
other countries who vie for honours in this tournament. This is the
first time that Sri Lanka is going to take part in this event.
Singapore is the highest ranked team in the boys section while
Vietnam are the top in the girls side but Korea are the favourites to
win the title. Korea are the ranked two and three teams respectively in
this event.
As Sri Lanka are making their debut in this championship they will
face a tough challenge. Two players have been selected after the
selection trials held early November at Sri Lanka Tennis Association
Courts, Green Path, Colombo.
The players are Shenelle Abeysekara of Bishop College and Sehan Gomez
of Royal College while Diana Alles will accompany the team as non
playing captain. Owing to the O/L examination many of the top players in
the island were reluctant to take part in play trials for selection.
