Earthquake kills one, injures 45 in Indonesia
INDONESIA, A strong earthquake of 6.7-magnitude struck off Sumbawa
island in southeastern Indonesia early Monday, killing one and injuring
45, the health ministry said.
The toll was "one dead and 45 people injured," ministry spokesman
Rustam Pakaya told AFP. He confirmed that the victim was a five-year-old
boy whom local television had reported dead in the quake's immediate
aftermath. Most of the injured were being treated at the general
hospital in the worst-affected district of Dompu on the island, a doctor
there, Suriyani, told AFP.
"We received 34 people injured. Some with slight injuries have gone
home already but some 20 people are still under hospital treatment, with
broken bones, open wounds and head injuries caused by collapsing walls,"
she said. ElShinta radio reported that 200 houses had been damaged in
Dompu district .
