Attempting to bribe Crime OIC, two arrested

The Bribery Commission yesterday arrested a broker with another person who attempted to give a Rs. 100,000 bribe to the Crime OIC of the Kalutara South Police Station following a complaint made by the OIC to the Bribery Commission.

"This is a very rare type of complaint made by a Police officer to the Commission when he is about to be bribed by some persons," the Director of the Investigation of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption SSP Neville Guruge told the Daily News last night.

The Crime OIC of Kalutara South Police Station following a raid conducted had arrested a suspect with heroin yesterday.

When the suspect was arrested, the suspect through one of his relations had contacted the OIC and pledged to give Rs. 100,000 as bribe by asking the OIC to reduce the quantity of the heroin seized with the suspect.

The Crime OIC immediately contacted the Bribery Commission and made a complaint on this incident. The Bribery Commission immediately sent a special team to Kalutara Police Station and arrested the two persons while they were attempting to bribe the OIC, he said.

According to the Director if some person is arrested with more than two grams of heroin, that person should be produced before a High Court. If the amount of heroin is less than two grams, that suspect should be produced before a Magistrate's Court and he can be granted bail.

Therefore when the suspect was arrested with more than two grams of heroin, the suspect through a broker has contacted the Crime OIC and pledged him to give Rs. 100,000 as bribe by asking to reduce the amount of heroin seized from the suspect.

Two suspects are now in the custody of the investigators of the Bribery Commission. They will be produced before the Kalutara Magistrate, he added.
