No teacher discrimination under this govt. - Premajayanth

COLOMBO: Teachers will not be discriminated under this Government,
Education Minister Susil Premajayanth said speaking at a ceremony to
mark World Teachers Day at Royal College Colombo yesterday. World
Teachers’ Day is celebrated on October 6 every year.
This year’s theme was ‘We Teachers of the World’ and focused on
‘Quality Teachers for Quality Education’ to the education sector.
The Minister said the Government believes in doing its best for the
betterment of teachers while protecting them from hindrances including
political harassment. He said teachers will not be politically
victimised under this Government.
Premajayanth said the Government allocated Rs. 75,000 million for the
education sector in 2007. Out of this, Rs. 65,000 million has been
allocated for teachers’ salaries. “The world knowledge doubles every
five years. Therefore Sri Lankans have to identify and face present day
world trends so as to move with the modern world.
When it comes to computer literacy Sri Lanka has to go a long way
when considering South Asian countries like Malaysia, Singapore and
Japan though our literacy rate is high,” the Minister said.
Four teachers who had dedicated their life to upgrade the education
sector were felicitated by the Minister.
