DISPERSED

Police acting on a Court order yesterday dispersed the graduates trained under the Tharuna Aruna programme who launched a sit-in protest on the road near Lake House. Earlier, the police held a meeting with the protestors in a bid to come to a settlement to get them off the roads which they had been occupying since the previous day, causing heavy traffic jams and inconvenience to people in and around Colombo. Police read the Fort Magistrate’s order to the protestors. They however refused to leave and Police, in line with the Court order, were compelled to fire tear gas to disperse them. The graduates were demanding permanent employment. Picture by Iresha Waduge
