Death of Dharmadasa Wanniarachchi

COLOMBO: The death occurred yesterday of former North Western Governor Dharmadasa Wanniarachchi at a private hospital in Colombo after a brief illness. He was 87.

He first entered Parliament representing the Pelmadulla electorate, winning the 1965 by-election. He was the deputy minister of State Enterprises and Scientific Affairs in the 1970 coalition Government. Wanniarachchi contested the 2000 General election and entered Parliament again. In 2004, he was appointed North Western Province Governor.

Wanniarachchi rendered a yeoman service for the SLFP’s victory at the 1994 and 2000 General Elections. He was a vice president of the party. He is survived by daughter Youth Affairs Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi and son attorney-at-law Prasanna Wanniarachchi. Funeral arrangements will be notified later.
