Death of Dharmadasa Wanniarachchi
COLOMBO: The death occurred yesterday of former North Western
Governor Dharmadasa Wanniarachchi at a private hospital in Colombo after
a brief illness. He was 87.
He first entered Parliament representing the Pelmadulla electorate,
winning the 1965 by-election. He was the deputy minister of State
Enterprises and Scientific Affairs in the 1970 coalition Government.
Wanniarachchi contested the 2000 General election and entered Parliament
again. In 2004, he was appointed North Western Province Governor.
Wanniarachchi rendered a yeoman service for the SLFP’s victory at the
1994 and 2000 General Elections. He was a vice president of the party.
He is survived by daughter Youth Affairs Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi
and son attorney-at-law Prasanna Wanniarachchi. Funeral arrangements
will be notified later.
