NHDA responsible for disability, claims man

Sandasen MARASINGHE

COLOMBO: A man sued the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) stating that he became disabled following an accident due to the poor maintenance of a house at a NHDA complex.

Nawaratne Hewage Francis of Himbutu Uyana Flats, Mulleriyawa filed a petition before the Colombo District Court citing the NHDA as respondent.

Francis in his plaint stated that he bought the house from the NHDA and the house was on the second floor of the Himbutu Uyana Flats. He said he made payments promptly.

Francis said the staircases were mossy and did not have lights. He said he became paralysed after he slipped and fell from the staircase around 8.30 p.m. on June 16, 2006.

He said he had to spent about Rs. 1,000 a day for treatment and was deprived of a Rs. 28,000 monthly income.

He claimed Rs. 1 million from the NHDA as damages.
