Wellassa Udana Scheme to irrigate over 4,000 acres

COLOMBO: The inaugural release of water in the ‘Weli Oya Amuna’ under the Wellassa Udana (Wellassa resurgence) scheme, will take place this morning under the auspices of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, President’s Media sources said.

Thereafter, President Rajapaksa will be presiding at the Wellassa Udana Mahothsavaya at the Pelwatte Sugar Factory play grounds.

The event would also include the Samurdhi Housing Lottery draw, the handing over of ‘housing cheques’ to beneficiaries, felicitation of persons who have rendered a special service and the introduction of the ‘Mihijana Loan Scheme’.

The Wellassa Udana programme is to irrigate over 4,000 acres of fallow land as a people-friendly service to the nation.

The project comes under the Nation Building and Infrastructural Development Ministry.
