Pallekanugala and Embilipitiya MV -rugby champions

RUGBY: Pallekanugala Vidyalaya, Awissawella Girls and Embilipitiya Maha Vidyalaya Boys took honours at the Under 20 and Under 16 rugby tournament held at the historic Kelani Valley club grounds, Talduwa on September 10.

The Pallekanugala Vidyalaya situated in a village off Awissawella had showed tremendous improvement for the past two years and had won several trophies in rugby tournaments in Sabaragamuwa.

These lasses beat the formidable Kavantissapura Vidyalaya, Embilipitiya easily by 22 points (1 goal, three tries) to nil, the try scorers were S. Hemakumari 2 tries Samanthie 1 and A. Thushari 1 try each.The Embilipitiya MMV, a school to be reckoned with also had come up in rugby in the recent years who beat Buddhist College, Talduwa 5 points to nil, while the Plate was won by Kegalle Maha Vidyalaya who beat St. Lukes, Ratnapura 7 points to 5.

More than 150 participants from 11 boys and girls schools took part in this tournament which was organised by the Sabaragamuwa RFU and conducted by the Rugby Development Committee, SLRFU.

The only Tamil Girls school St. Mary’s College (Yatiyantota) who take part in rugby in Sabaragamuwa emerged third place who received a rugby ball and certificates in this tournament.

The chief guest was Malik Ahamadeen (General Manager Mas Active Synery Seethawaka Industrial Park Awissawella) while the guest of honour was Prasanna Amarathunga (Manager Human Resources and Administration Mas Active Synergy) also present were Dinuka Madurawela (Synergy Sports Secretary) and Ushani Dharmasiri (Executive Human Resources Mas Active Synergy).

The best player of the tournament was Sithum Chamith of Embilipitiya Maha Vidyalaya.
