Correct leadership can lead a country towards progress - Weerawansa
CHINA: The massive development, the People’s Republic of China has
achieved during the last five decades prove that a country can march
towards progress if it has the correct leadership, said JVP
Parliamentarian Group Leader Wimal Weerawansa in Xian, China.
He expressed these sentiments when he met Chinese Communist Party’s
Shanxi Provincial Committee Organisational Activities Department
Director General and Provincial Standing Committee member Lee Jinbin at
the Communist Party Headquarters in Xian during a tour of China by a JVP
Parliamentary delegation.
Weerawansa who said he was happy to visit Xian and Shanxi areas which
had contributed much towards the Chinese civilisation added that it was
evident that the areas had given pride of place to agriculture where as
they saw urbanised development in Beijing.
China and Sri Lanka had a long history dating back to thousands of
years. Sri Lanka had even exported minerals to Damascus in the seventh
Century B.C. according to recorded history.
Recalling many other similarities between the two countries, he said
whereas China had fought against Japanese and French imperialism, Sri
Lanka too had fought against Portuguese, Dutch and English colonialism.
He said Chinese leader late Mao Tse Tung expelled the Kuo-Ming Tang
regime in a skilful manner.
After fighting against Japanese imperialism, China was able to
achieve complete economic, social and political freedom.
Sri Lanka today was facing many problems due to its inability to
obtain full economic, social and political freedom along with
independence from colonial domination. Weerawansa said, Sri Lanka was
again facing the threat of new colonialism from Western powers and
saddled with an enormous debt burden.
Western powers were using the country’s economic plight to dabble in
its internal affairs infringing its sovereignty. Sri Lanka’s strategic
geographical position and untapped petroleum and other resources have
made these powers interested in the country’s affairs.
The JVP aimed to salvage the country from this threat and steer it
towards development and progress by learning lessons from the
achievements made by China and its Communist Party.
Lee Jinbin said Sri Lanka and China had a long history of friendly
ties and relations. Their committee members had a strong awareness about
Sri Lanka as they have all visited this country in the past.
