Grenade in tank detonated

TALAWA: The Bomb Disposal Unit of the Sri Lanka Army Anuradhapura
detonated a hand grenade found buried in the Karagahawewa Tank near
Talawa.
The tank is being renovated under the Gama Neguma program. The
back-hoe operator Kumara saw this grenade, while he was digging the
tank, being moved to a distance of about 100 meters in the scoop of the
back-hoe.
He informed the Chairman Talawa Pradeshiya Sabha Upali Gunawardhana
who intimated to Talawa Police OIC Jayantha Dahanaka.
OIC Jayantha Dahanaka arranged with the Bomb Disposal Unit to
detonate it.
Sergeant Jayasuriya and Corporal Rupasinghe detonated the hand
grenade.
It is believed that someone had thrown the grenade into the
Karagahawewa Tank when it was full.
The draw-pin of the grenade had rusted.
OIC Police Talawa Jayantha Dahanaka Chairman Talawa Pradeshiya Sabha
Upali Gunawardane and the Army personnel inspected the area before the
detonation.
