Prof. Vitharana tells UNP: Join hands to seek solution to national
issue

COLOMBO: All Party Representative Committee (APRC) Chairman Prof.
Tissa Vitharana appealed to the UNP leadership to set aside petty
political differences and join the fray in seeking a sustainable
solution to the burning national issue.
Prof. Vitharana told the Cabinet press briefing at the Government
Information Department Auditorium in Narahenpita on Thursday, that he
was sorry about the UNP General Secretary's announcement on their
withdrawal from the APRC meetings, based on unfounded allegations,
despite their earlier undertaking in writing, stating that they would
submit their proposals before August end.
"In the context of the LTTE's stand that a politically negotiated
settlement was futile when the two main political parties in the South
are disunited and divided, a Southern consensus of the two main
political parties, the SLFP and the UNP, is crucial. I urge the UNP
leadership to set aside all political differences for the sake of the
country, give the highest priority to this national issue and revert to
the discussion table," Prof. Vitharana said.
Outlining the progress to date, of the 40 APRC meetings held during a
period of over one year, with the participation of 14 parties
represented in Parliament, Prof. Vitharana said many problems were
addressed, discussed and solved. They were hopeful of reaching a
consensus prior to August 15. Nevertheless, two questions remain
unresolved requiring further consultation.
"Last Tuesday, two parties were of the view that they would refer
back to their respective party leadership for a wider consultation and
exchange of views with them.
Therefore, we decided to meet again next week, for a final meaningful
discussion. Hopefully, we expect to finalise and submit the final
proposal to the President next week," Prof. Vitharana added. |
