VAVUNIYA: Six LTTE cadres were killed and several others injured in a
confrontation with the Security Forces in Periyathampanai, Vavuniya on
Monday afternoon. The Security Forces successfully repulsed the attack,
the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said.
According to a MCNS spokesman the Security Forces foot patrol had
come under an LTTE attack at around 2.45 p.m. in Periyathampanai.
“Troops retaliated the attack successfully forcing the Tiger cadres
to flee the area”, he added.
LTTE radio communications confirmed that they lost six cadres and
several others sustained injuries in the retaliatory attack of the
Security Forces, the MCNS spokesman said.
In a separate incident, a soldier was killed and another injured when
the LTTE triggered off a claymore mine targeting an army foot patrol in
Chekadipilaw, Vavuniya on Monday around 2.00 p.m.
The MCNS spokesman said the injured soldier was admitted to Vavuniya
hospital.
Meanwhile, Security Forces launched a search operation following the
first blast and subsequently recovered another claymore mine from the
same area.
“Another human catastrophe was averted by vigilant troops,” he added.
