LTTE infiltrators driven back

WELI OYA: A group of LTTE cadres attempting to infiltrate a village in Ranabapura, Weli-Oya was beaten back by Security Forces last morning. A Home Guard was killed in the incident, the Media Centre for the National Security said.

“An attack planned by the LTTE on the Ranabapura area in Weli-Oya was averted by the Security Forces who forced the Tigers to flee from the area” a spokesman for the MCNS said.

“At the time of the attack three Home Guards who were on duty observed the movement of a group of LTTE terrorists and alerted the Security Forces who rushed to the scene, he added.

Meanwhile, two LTTE cadres were killed when a Navy foot patrol opened fire on a group of fleeing tiger cadres in Panakualam on Tuesday night. A haul of arms and ammunition too were recovered.

According to a spokesman for the MCNS the Navy foot patrol manning defences in Panakulam launched small arms fire at a group of fleeing terrorists killing two. In a subsequent search operation troops recovered two bodies of LTTE cadres, a 40mm grenade launcher, a nine 40mm grenade launcher bomber, a T56 assault rifle and two I- Communication sets.

In a separate incident, acting on a tip-off by a civilian the Security Forces recovered a cache of weapons hidden in a shrub jungle on Tuesday evening in Sambaltivu, Trincomalee.

The arms cache included a 40mm grenade launcher, 40 of 40mm grenade launcher bomb, two hand grenades, three T56 magazines, 90 of 7.62x3mm ammunition, two claymore mines, a 40mm grenade launcher pack and a belt order.
