Death of architect Panini Tennekoon
COLOMBO: Renowned architect Panini Tennekoon (84), who
designed several well-known landmarks and buildings in Sri Lanka, passed
away yesterday.
A former Chief Architect and Additional Director of the Department of
Buildings, Tennekoon studied architecture in Australia at the University
of Melbourne.
Affectionately called ‘Pani’, he was also the Chief Architect of the
Greater Colombo Development Authority (now known as the Urban
Development Authority) and a consultant architect at the Central
Engineering Consultancy Bureau.
He designed the Samadhi, Horagolla, the monument to Prime Minister
D.S. Senanayake at Independence Square, buildings at the zoo, Siyane
Teacher Training College, the Kalubowila Hospital, Kollupitiya Police
building, Department of National Archives and the Supreme Court Complex,
among others. His funeral will take place today at 2 p.m. at the General
Cemetery, Borella. |
