COLOMBO: Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge
Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena yesterday granted bail to Tiran Alles, who
had been remanded for allegedly financing a terrorist organisation.
Judge Weerawardena ordered Alles to furnish cash bail in Rs. 500,000
and a bond of Rs. one million each with three sureties.
At the outset, Senior State Counsel Gihan Kulatunga objected to Alles
being granted bail and submitted to court that investigations have still
not been completed.
If the suspect is granted bail it would hamper investigations, the
Senior State Counsel said.
President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva, Senior Counsel for the suspect,
moving for bail submitted to court that his client was produced in court
on a bailable offence.
He will not make any attempt to hamper investigations or interfere
with the prosecution witnesses. His passport had been impounded and all
his bank accounts freezed the President’s Counsel added.
Granting bail, the Judge directed Alles to appear before the TID
every Sunday between 9 am and noon.
The Judge observed: “If the suspect violates any of the bail
conditions, the bail bond will be cancelled and re-remanded.”
The Judge directed the case to be called again on July 17.
President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva with Shanaka Ranasinghe and Nalin
Ladduwahetti instructed by G.G. Arulpragasam appeared Tiran Alles.
