Kandy, CR and CH battle for Caltex 'A' Div. League Title

RUGBY: Defending champions Kandy Sports club which is aiming
to retain the Caltex 'A' Division League Rugby Title for a record
seventh successive year continue to head the points table after their
hard fought 29-13 win over the gallant Police outfit at Police Park on
Saturday.
The lads from Kandy who were sans several regulars crossed the
policemen's goal line on four occasions to take their tries tally to 41
in four games and have obtained 18,00 points.
The Ceylonese Rugby and Football Club who are making a determined bid
to clinch the League Title which has eluded them since 1998 lie in
second position after their runaway win over Old Zahirians by 93 points
to 7 on Sunday at Longden Place.
The Red Shirts who scored 15 tries in that match have a total of 35
tries in four outings and have collected 17.5 points. The formidable CH
and FC which scored a convincing 32-5 win over the Sri Lanka Army on
Saturday at Havelock Park is in third position having scored 19 tries in
four matches and have 17.00 points.
All three teams remain unbeaten and after four weeks of competition
it is turning out to be a three cornered contest between Kandy SC, CR
and FC and CH and FC for the Caltex 'A' Division League Title - the
symbol of rugby supremacy.
The lads from Maitland Crescent last won the 'A' Division League
Title in the year 2000 under the leadership of Ajit Upawansa in the
absence of regular skipper Nazeem Mohamed who was sidelined due to
injury. |
